Participation in the seminar “Review of international experience in the timely diagnosis of cancer” in Chile

On Wednesday 22nd, the seminar “Review of international experience in the timely diagnosis of cancer” took place, organised by the Santiago Medical Association (Colmed) and the Chilean National Cancer Institute (INCANCER) as part of the public health dialogues initiated by Colmed regarding the cancer alert declared by the Chilean Ministry of Health.

The seminar began with a presentation by Patricia Pizarro, Undersecretary of Public Health at the Ministry of Health, on the cancer alert. It then focused on the various interventions for the timely diagnosis of cancer developed collaboratively within the framework of the EquityCancer-LA project, which were briefly introduced by María Luisa Vázquez, Director of the CSC Research Service.

The lessons learnt and the sustainability of the strategies introduced in the public health service networks were discussed: in Chile, led by Isabel Abarca, Deputy Director of Institutional Development at the National Cancer Institute; in Colombia, presented by Amparo Susana Mogollón, professor at the Universidad del Rosario; and from Ecuador, presented by Ana Lucía Torres, director of the Institute of Public Health at the Pontifical Catholic University of Ecuador. Furthermore, Josep Maria Borràs, from the Catalonia Oncology Master Plan and a researcher with EquityCancer-LA, presented and discussed the Catalan experience, highlighting the importance of implementing streamlined pathways that can make a difference in the prognosis and treatment of cancer patients.

Bettina Müller, an oncologist and president of the Chilean Cooperative Oncology Research Group (GOCCHI), also spoke. Finally, the session concluded by emphasising the importance of integrating the public health services network, based on strengthening primary care and coordination with secondary care, to combat fragmentation and improve diagnostic times.
