Participation of the EquityCancer LA-Colombia Project in the 11th Research Conference of the Samaritan Network

On 06 December 2024, the EquityCancer LA-Colombia Project research team was invited to participate in the 11th. Jornada de Investigación de la Red Samaritana, strategic partner of the Project in the city of Bogota.

Amparo Mogollón Pérez, Principal Investigator of EquityCancer LA-Colombia and professor at the Universidad del Rosario, presented a paper on the ‘Experience of integrating care to improve early diagnosis of cancer in Cundinamarca’, presenting some of the results obtained in the baseline study of the EquityCancer project, as well as the elements that have been taken into account in the design and implementation of a multicomponent strategy aimed at improving access to timely diagnosis of cancer, aimed at both professionals and users of the Sabana Centro Health Region of the department of Cundinamarca.

There was also the opportunity to present two communications in poster format. The first, developed by Lilian Gabriela Cala, research assistant at EquityCancer LA-Colombia, entitled, ‘Time intervals for cancer diagnosis in public health service networks in Cundinamarca, Colombia’, described the time interval of the provider and the patient, as well as the differences between the intervals of primary and specialised care for patients attending public networks in the department.

Similarly, Paula Arroyo, from the research team of the San Juan de Dios Research Institute - San Juan de Dios Health Park, and who is developing her doctoral stay with the EquityCancer-LA Colombia team, presented the poster on ‘The cost of cancer diagnosis in Colombia’, who, based on data from the baseline study of the Project, pointed out how the determinants of diagnostic costs in the main types of cancer in the country are related to the overuse of emergency and hospitalisation services, which have high unit costs.

The seminar was attended by approximately 60 people, including the Secretary of Health of Cundinamarca, managers, health professionals and associated researchers, as well as members of the Local Steering Committee of the EquityCancer Project, who noted the importance of the event for the department of Cundinamarca.
