Certificate presentation ceremony for the second edition of the inter-level training course on early cancer diagnosis in Chile

On 27 October, the School of Public Health at the University of Chile hosted the certificate award ceremony for doctors participating in the second edition of the inter-level training programme ‘Building capacities for the timely diagnosis of cancer in the North Metropolitan Health Service network’. The programme is part of the international EquityCancer-LA project, led in Chile by Professor Pamela Eguiguren, an academic in the Collective Health and Social Medicine Programme at the School of Public Health. With this second edition, 72 (about 18%) of the primary care doctors in the northern network have now been trained in early cancer detection.

The ceremony was attended by health authorities, academics and professionals from the healthcare network. The director of research at the Faculty of Medicine, Dr Leandro Carreño, participated in the inauguration, highlighting the importance of having secured the support of the Horizon 2020 programme for a project that brings together different countries in Latin America and Europe. The director of the School of Public Health, Dr Lorena Rodríguez Osiac, pointed to the participatory methodology of the process and the co-construction of the intervention. Dr María Luisa Vázquez, Health and Social Consortium of Catalonia, general coordinator of EquityCancer-LA, highlighted how research can translate into concrete improvements in health services and emphasised that the ultimate goal is to strengthen public health systems and reduce inequalities in access. For his part, the director of the North Metropolitan Health Service, Dr Antonio Infante, pointed out the importance of collaboration that connects the university with the practice of health services and drives further improvement of the public network.

Nurses Glasfira Leyton, head of the Coordination Unit with the San José Hospital Complex Network, and María Alejandra Cura, head of Non-Medical Teaching at the National Cancer Institute, both members of the local steering committee of EquityCancer-LA in Chile, gave a brief presentation on the process of development, implementation, and evaluation of the Inter-level Training Programme for the timely diagnosis of cancer.

This was followed by the presentation of certificates to the participating doctors. Finally, to close the event, the play Mama Mía, by Argentine actress Mariana Cabrol, addressed the personal, health and social challenges of a breast cancer patient, followed by a discussion with the audience.
