Dr. M. Luisa Vázquez, Director of the Health Policy and Health Services Research Group at the Consorci de Salut i Social de Catalunya (CSC), participated in the XLIV Annual Meeting of the Spanish Society of Epidemiology (SEE) and the XXI Congress of the Portuguese Association of Epidemiology (APE), held in Pamplona from 23 to 26 June, presenting research in the field of integrated care.
Under the theme “Advancing with equity towards Public Health for the entire population”, the congress brought together more than 700 health professionals, including researchers, academics, and policymakers. Key challenges discussed during the event included the evaluation of health services, quality of care, prevention and management of health problems, vaccination, improving cancer detection, climate change, and artificial intelligence.
In this context, the Health Policy and Health Services Research Group presented the oral communication entitled “Challenges in conducting surveys among patients diagnosed with cancer: experiences in Chile, Colombia and Ecuador”, which analysed the difficulties involved in carrying out patient surveys in settings with limited clinical records—an essential tool for identifying diagnostic delays.
The findings highlight differences across countries and underline the importance of having high-quality health records, as well as ensuring strong public stewardship of the health system to guarantee access to data. These elements are key to strengthening cancer research and promoting early diagnosis.
This study is part of the international EquityCancer-LA project (GA 965226), led by the CSC Health Policy and Health Services Research Group, and funded by the European Union, with the participation of several European and Latin American institutions.
The communication was co-authored by Valentina Rangel, Maria-Luisa Vázquez and Ingrid Vargas (Consorci de Salut i Social de Catalunya), Amparo-Susana Mogollón-Pérez (Universidad del Rosario), Pamela Eguiguren (School of Public Health Dr. Salvador Allende Gossens, University of Chile), Ana Lucia Torres and Andrés Peralta (Pontificia Universidad Católica del Ecuador), and Maria Rubio-Valera (Sant Joan de Déu Foundation, Catalan Institute of Oncology).
