Successful international seminar on early cancer diagnosis in Santiago de Chile

More than a hundred people attended the seminar Improving equity in access to cancer diagnosis in health service networks in different Latin American countries held on 30 April and organised by the School of Public Health of the University of Chile and the Research Service (SEPPS) of the Consorci de Salut i Social de Catalunya. It analysed the problems in access to diagnosis and the interventions adapted to improve them, developed in the framework of EquityCancer-LA, funded by the EU.

The seminar took place in the Hall of Honour of the University of Chile. Among the more than 150 face-to-face participants were health authorities from national, regional and local levels, managers, health service professionals, academics and health service user organisations. Held in the framework of the international EquityCancer-LA project, it was attended by the collaborating institutions, Universidad del Rosario, Pontifícia Universidad Católica del Ecuador, University of Copenhagen, Universidade Nova de Lisboa and the Sant Joan de Déu Foundation of Barcelona.

María Luisa Vázquez, Director of the CSC Research Service was one of the speakers who gave the welcome address, together with Lorena Rodríguez, Director of the Dr Salvador Allende School of Public Health at the University of Chile; Dr Sung H. Kim, Head of the Department of Comprehensive Cancer Management of the Division of Prevention and Disease Control of the Ministry of Health of Chile, and Anahí Urquiza, Vice-Rector for Research and Development at the University of Chile.

In his speech, Vázquez, who also presented the design and current status of the research, wanted to highlight three aspects of the project: ‘the great international relevance, because it addresses two central issues of health systems, such as the fragmentation of care and the proposal to improve the coordination and integration of care to combat it; the way to collaborate between academia and health services and the commitment to strengthen public health systems’.

Afterwards, the round tables began: the first one analysed comparatively the results on access to cancer diagnosis in Chile, Colombia and Ecuador, with the participation of Verónica Espinel (CSC) who focused on the delays and trajectories in diagnosis, Ingrid Vargas (CSC), on the factors that influence and Maria Rubio (Parc Sanitari and Fundació Sant Joan de Deu) on the costs of diagnosis. The second dealt with the experience of integrating care to improve access to early cancer diagnosis in Chile, with presentations by Pamela Eguiguren (University of Chile), María Alejandra Cura (National Cancer Institute), Glasfira Leyton (San José Hospital) and Daniel Colvin (Primary Care Physician, Independencia). In the last one, dedicated to the experiences with the adaptation and implementation of the intervention in Colombia and Ecuador, Amparo Mogollón (Universidad del Rosario, Colombia) and Ana Lucía Torres (Instituto de Salud Pública, PUCE) participated, and María Soledad Barría (former Minister of Health) moderated the round table. Antonio Infante, director of the Servicio de Salud Metropolitano Norte closed the seminar by expressing the relevance of the intervention and the commitment to the successful implementation and adaptation of the way of working in other areas of care in the health services network.
